In the 2006 drought, we had to spend more than $300,000 on additional hay and we said  we’d never do that again. Now day-to-day requirements are met by three above-ground silage stacks, while another three buried pits hold another 1,000 dry tonnes.
We pretend we don’t have the buried silage — it’s there for emergencies and we hope that we’ll never need it.
